Air Cleaners
When sunlight streams in through a window, do you see a galaxy of dust
particles in the air? Believe it or not, even on the sunniest day, most dust isn’t visible.
In fact, every cubic foot of air in the average home is loaded with about 3 million dust particles.
"Dust" is a catchall term that describes the minute residue sloughed off by a house and its occupants.
It comes from fireplace, cigarette and cooking smoke; skin and pet dander; molds, mildew and fungi;
pollen and plant spores; and a variety of other sources. Of course, dust is most visible where it
settles and collects...on furniture or—worse—the hidden crannies and top shelves visited by a
dust cloth only once each spring. But dust isn’t just an embarrassment waiting to be discovered
by your mother-in-law. It can be a serious pollutant, particularly for allergy sufferers,
asthmatics, people with bronchial problems and those who are hyper-sensitive to airborne particulates.
For everyone, breathing air laden with bacteria and other contaminants is less than ideal.
Dust is, after all, pollution, and the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that indoor
air is two to five times as polluted as outdoor air. |

Electronic
Air Cleaner
A Cleaner
Environment For Your Family
We know the indoor air quality of your
home is important to you. That's why you may
breathe easier after installing a Trane
electronic air cleaner. It removes unwanted
pollutants - particles like dust, pollen,
animal hair and dander, dust mites, mildew,
lint, fungus, smoke and cooking grease, even
bacteria. An air cleaner actually draws the
dirt out of the air, so your wallpaper and
paint stay cleaner longer. And, you don't
have to clean draperies, upholstery and
other furnishings as often. Your entire
environment benefits from an electronic air
cleaner from Trane. And think about it, your
carpet and drapery cleaning bills could
benefit also. |

It's A Simple
Solution Here's how an
electronic air cleaner works. The air in
your home circulates through your heating or
cooling system, carrying millions of
airborne particles through the ductwork.
When this air goes through an electronic air
cleaner, the pre-filter traps the majority
of the large particles. The smaller
particles continue to pass through the
pre-filter and receive a positive electrical
charge. Collector plates, which carry a
negative charge, attract these small
particles like magnets, holding them until
they're washed off. Cleaner, filtered air is
then circulated throughout your home. |

Efficiency
Adding a Trane air cleaner to your central
cooling and heating system can make an
enormous difference in the indoor air
quality of your home. And, it helps keep it
clean too, while using less energy than a
40-watt bulb.

Relief For
Allergy Sufferers If you
or any member of your family has allergies,
an electronic air cleaner from Trane could
mean welcome relief. Allergy-aggravating
particles are significantly reduced, meaning
fewer symptoms and a healthier environment.

The System
Story |
|
| A heating and
cooling system is only as good as its parts.
And, even though each component is separate,
they're all designed and engineered to work
together as a system. With a matched system,
you can rest assured that you'll experience
maximum comfort and enhanced energy
efficiency. |

Today's
homes are more tightly constructed than
ever. This means less airborne dirt and dust
can infiltrate the home from outside.
However, it also means dirt, dust, grease, pollen, spores and other
airborne particles that already exist in a
home can't get out and are recirculated over
and over again.
To remove these particles, that can cause unnecessary physical
discomfort as well as damage furnishings,
more and more homeowners are turning to high
efficiency electronic air cleaners.
The reason: electronic air cleaners can remove up to 95% of these
undesirable airborne particles. A typical
disposable furnace filter only removes 10 to
15% of the contaminants.
According to the Trane Home Comfort Institute, electronic air
cleaners are usually installed in the duct
carrying air back to the furnace.
Operation of the unit is fairly simple. First, air passes through a
mesh-type filter that catches large airborne
particles. Smaller particles that get
through the filter pass through an ionizing
section where they receive an electrical
charge.
These charged particles then pass through plates which have an
opposite charge that attracts the particles
like a magnet. The particles remain on the
plates until the air cleaner elements are
washed. The result is a healthier, cleaner
indoor environment.
The environment is healthier because electronic air cleaners remove
much of the dust, pollen, mold spores and
other microscopic irritants that make life
miserable for people with allergies and
respiratory problems. These same
contaminants can also harbor harmful
bacteria and viruses.
The home is cleaner because electronic air cleaners remove the dust
particles that normally settle on walls,
floors, drapes, upholstery and other
furnishings. This allows homeowners to spend
less time and money on routine house
cleaning tasks. Electronic air cleaners also
remove dust particles that can damage home
entertainment equipment and computer
hardware.
Electronic air cleaners do all this using only about the same
amount of electricity as a 40-watt light
bulb. However, to do their job, the heating
and cooling system must be running.
In this regard, Trane Home Comfort Institute experts report that
new technology in the field of electronic
fan motors and controls is drastically
reducing the cost of running a fan
continuously.
And they say this new generation of motors and controls not only
allows more economical air cleaner operation
but also lowers overall operating costs,
reduces noise and provides greater levels of
comfort.
